Can you make a top 10 list of your favourite Depeche Mode songs?
Here's mine:
1. Enjoy the Silence
2. Never Let Me Down Again
3. Mercy In You (Why is this song never played?)
4. Peace
5. Only When I Lose Myself
6. Policy of Truth
7. Everything Counts
8. Home
9. Little 15
10. A Question of Time
So what is yours?
It's a tough choice, but I'll try:
1. Just Can't Get Enough - there are mountains written and said about how different is the rest of the DM oeuvre, but it was not only the bright beginning, this song is an immortal dance hit, and every generation finds in it something to get fascinated about - for ~3 decades long.
2. Personal Jesus - a song which made U2 *** in their pants and seriously discuss the option of becoming a fully electronic band (I am not joking).
3. A Question of Time (I prefer a live version from "101") - brilliant just like everything on "Black Celebration" - their last collaboration with Daniel Miller.
4. Enjoy The Silence - It reminds me "Shake The Disease", but it's developed into something which I define as "Per aspera ad astra" because this song is dark and bright at the same time.
5. Never Let Me Down Again - well, that's the first production without D.Miller, and it was one of the best examples of the band changing their direction and gaining even more respect.
6. Little 15 - that's when the simplicity and complexity meat each other in the same tune.
7. Any Second Now (Instrumental) - it's simple, it's pure and I never get bored of it.
8. Wrong - one of the best songs in years, and I like SOTU, the grumbling about the album is ... WRONG!
9. Breath - a heart breaking song, but suddenly good for arranging and disassembling a Christmas tree. ‹(ᴖ‿ ᴖ)›
10.More Than A Party - represents the post-punk nature of the band like no other song: the quotation of Lenin, a little bit of a funeral march and the sound of a running train - they used it all in one song! Amazing creativity and a great tune.
