What was the name of the famous singer in the 1940s who made "God Bless America" famous?

She was chubby, and pleasant, and I remember seeing pictures of her when I was a child in the '40s. It seems like her name was Kate Something. She had a home on the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York.

It was Kate Smith who first sang the revised version of God Bless America rewritten by Irving Berlin in 1938, Berlin originally rewrote it for a musical in 1918 and rewrote it when Nazism was rising in 1938. Woody Guthrie wrote This Land is Your Land in response.

How realistic is the merger between Mercy West and Seattle Grace on Grey's Anatomy?

I know most of the show is total rubbish, but I was just wondering how realistic the merger was? Do hospitals ever actually merge like that? And if it was Seattle Grace that ran out of money and its reputation, why did they get to stay and the other people had to come to them? And what about the hospital the Mercy West people are leaving, and all the equipment and beds and stuff - isn't that a huge financial loss? They are wasting an entire building and loads of equipment etc. - is this just total crap, or is there a good reason I'm just missing?

to be frank, who really cares, the most accurate thing you said was '' ...this is just total crap'', have you nothing better to distract you from reality?
to answer your question, grace and mercy are a comfortable mix, anatomy, grey or otherwise, has nothing to do with it.

German Americans and Irish Americans, are you ashamed of ditching your cultures to become White in America?

Seriously, you were made fun of by the English. And now you have ditched your German and Irish cultures, including German and Celtic languages, just so you can be White in America. Don't you at least feel a bit ashamed?

i didn't have much of a choice in the decision to immigrate here.

i haven't ditched my culture.
My family celebrates Xmas on Xmas Eve, like they did in Germany.
My family eats traditional German foods, and cooks them in traditional German ways.
I can speak and understand basic German.
And I've been raised to appreciate a good beer, none of this sh*tty watered down American crap.

When asked, I refer to myself as European American, not White. But that's mainly because I believe in equality.
If a black guy is considered African American, then I'm European American.

FYI the Atlantic Ocean doesn't magically change a person's skin color. my ancestors were white before they left Europe.
