I have an old can of Squirt which is still sealed but almost empty. How does that happen?

The can was in a cupboard next to the fridge. Was cleaning out the cupboard one day and discovered several cans of Squirt which had been there for about two or three years, untouched. They were almost empty, but still apparently sealed, and there was some gunk on the floor of the cupboard.

It has a whole in the bottom, which caused a leak. The stuff inside the can that leaked may have been there for a while, so it doesn't seem like the Squirt you know.
