The classic play began its run in 1949. The World War II setting was timely, but it was the deeper themes and original music that kept this show timely for decades. The story revolves around two couples, Nellie, Frenchman Emile de Becque, Marine Lt. Joseph Cable and young local Vietnamese girl name Liat. Nellie originally falls for Emile but has second thoughts when she learns of his two bi-racial children. Joseph also hesitates because of his prejudices. Rodgers and Hammerstein drive home their point about prejudices being taught with songs like “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught.” The musical taught tolerance years before civil rights movements and make Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific tickets a treasure worth finding.
