Is it just me or was the "Kenny Rogers incident" ignored like it didn't happen?

In Game 2 of the 2006 World Series, Detroit Tigers starter Kenny Rogers had this thing on his hand that looked like pine tar, but wasn't verified. Ironically enough, it was the only game the Tigers won in that series.

Did the media just blow it off? Curious as to why?
That was NOT dirt. Last I checked dirt isn't wet and gooey.
