How To Write Original Songs That People Like

So you would like to write your own original songs. However the few attempts that you have made did not turn out as you would have liked because the tune or the melody were not flowing so well or were not catchy enough for people to like.

So how do you write songs that people will like or will sing and hum along as you are performing them? Well, brace yourself because one of the methods to write catchy and be rather controversial, but it not only works and works darn well!

Sometimes, when somebody's original melody sounds good, they also sounded like another song. But you just can't figure out which other song it sounded like. There is this vaguely familiar feeling that you have heard a sort of similar song before. Have you had that feeling?

I am sure all of us had this feeling before and I can even dare to say that it will happen again and again with other new songs. Actually, this subconscious feeling is rather common as after all because every song is a somewhat recycled tune given the limited number of musical notation, chords and rhythms. So all new songs will somehow or other overlap other songs that are already in existence. Therefore all songs will have parts of their tune similar with another song or even songs. Therefore it is perfectly alright if parts of your song sounds like another song although you did not intend it that way.

As a matter of fact, if your new song sounds familiar, that may be a good thing. Before you jump up and shout copyright infringement, please be aware that I am not talking about infringing other composer's copyright, I am talking about a part of your tune that sounds somewhat like another song.

So why is this similarity a good thing? Well, it is simply because people can relate to your tune even more and so, they will like the song and remember it. They will want to listen to your song because of the familiarity. Song familiarity invoke a pleasant feeling of emotion and most of the time, they don't even know why they felt good hearing your melody. This is why your song can easily be remembered and will keep humming in people's head.

Even if your listeners realized parts of your song is somewhat similar to another song, so what, no big deal because as a whole, the song is in your own original song with your own original lyrics, your own melody and expressions and thus it is your own original song!

I must stress the point that you must not intentionally infringe upon other people's copyright. This is not about ripping off other composer's works. This is about creating your own melodies and tunes that sound like a familiar tune.

So how do I go about writing familiar sounding songs? Well, let's start by choosing a song that you like and is familiar with and hum the tune. Just hum it but don't sing the lyrics out. This will get you thinking 'melodically' and soon, you should be able to hum certain variations of that tune. Just let your imagination take over and toss the melody around as you imagined it and let your creative juices flow.

Once you can jumble out the tune nicely, then sing it aloud and this will become your own tune. It is really that simple.

Another way to do this is to choose a song that you don't even know or heard of before. Listen to this song once, and then listen to it again. The second time when you are listening to it, sing along with the song. Yes, you probably will not remember the tune very well, but nevertheless, just sing along and this is when you make up a melody line of your own with the melodic structure of this obscure song.

Whichever method you have chosen to write a song with a somewhat familiar tune, you must feel good about it. It is your gut feeling of feeling pleasant that you know you have written a good catchy original tune that people will like and remember.

Party Themes For Teens

Your teen's birthday is pretty close and you are probably thinking of what party themes you should have. Be rest assured that party themes are not difficult to think of and which a little help in the right direction you shouldn't have a problem finding a theme. If you watch television and you read magazines there are possible thousands of themes you can come up with. When it comes to party themes let your imagination run wild.

The Survivor Theme

The popular reality television series has lately also been adapted into a party theme for teenagers. Kids dress up in survivor like outfits and take part in various challenges and competitions. For instance some kids will be given the task of building tent of the material supplied to them, and later test it for sturdiness. The opposing tribe of kids will be responsible for taking down the tents by throwing buckets of water on them to simulate a tropical storm. Order kids can be put to the task of building a relay system to fill bottled water etc. the idea here is to get kids involved in solving various real life challenges like those faced on the television show.

You can also plan a scavenger hunt. You can hide useful items and tools in various locations, including food and other necessities. People really love the survivor theme especially if you decorate for it in a special way. You can hang grass skirts, and Hawaiian leis etc to give the place a more tropical look. Also serve a number of tropical dishes to fit in with the theme. Great dishes for this theme include mangos, chicken with rice and pine apples etc. don't forget to add a few tiny umbrellas to the drinks you serve at the party. Arranging such a theme is also not difficult it just requires a bit of imagination.

The golden oldies

Teens of all ages love to dress up and have fun so better way than to host a golden oldies party for them. The time can either be the 40's 50's or the 60's and every one can be dressed in costumes that reflect those eras. You can even have kids dressed up as Victorians for a really old golden oldie special birthday party theme. However the good thing about the 50s and the 60s themes is it's easy to find music of these eras. People mostly go for music of the great king Elvis Presley or you can also choose Frank Sinatra however the later didn't sing party songs. If you are looking for something funkier you can have a 1960's party. Go ahead and purchase the Woodstock soundtrack that will fill your party with amusing music. Have kids dressed in bell bottoms and tie and die T-shirts, girls can be dressed in mini skirts and probably also an afro wig and large glasses. Couple that with bangles and head scarves and that will complete the look. If you don't know what to wear just pickup an old movie and you should get enough ideas.

How to Play Jazz Guitar

There are many ways of starting to investigate how to play jazz guitar. Some guitar players see jazz as a way to learn improvisation. Others see jazz guitar as an instrument that accompanies a certain repertoire of songs. But once you start to actually study jazz you are confronted with a head-spinning array of odd looking chord shapes and endless discussion of modes and scales.

Just what is your average beginner guitar player supposed to think when all he wants to do is learn how to play jazz guitar? Well, jazz kind of grew like Topsy from its beginning as part of Black American culture in the early twentieth century. The rest of America and the rest of the world started adding their own interpretations of jazz music.

So now under the heading of jazz guitar we have widely diverse styles as those of Wes Montgomery, Lenny Breau, Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd, John McLaughlin, Herb Ellis, Pat Metheny and Charlie Christian. This list is just off the top of my head and these guys' playing styles are as different from each other as cheese is from Shinola.

So where is the starting point for anybody who wants to learn how to play jazz guitar? I would have to say the repertoire. There is a body of songs and instrumental pieces that are called jazz standards. There is a website called Jazz Standards dot com that has twenty pages listing one thousand jazz standards.

Here is a list of familiar titles from the top one hundred jazz standards: Body and Soul, All the Things You Are, Summertime, 'Round Midnight, My Funny Valentine, What Is This Thing Called Love?, Yesterdays, Stella By Starlight, Autumn Leaves, Star Dust, Willow Weep for Me, Honeysuckle Rose, Sweet Georgia Brown, Caravan, The Man I Love, St Louis Blues, How High the Moon, Oh, Lady Be Good!, Take the "A" Train, Embraceable You, On Green Dolphin Street, These Foolish Things, Sophisticated Lady, Ain't Misbehavin', Night and Day, Georgia on My Mind and Satin Doll.

So the jazz repertoire seems to be the one common thing amongst the diversity of styles of playing and levels of innovation. Of course you need to get into subjects like what jazz chords are and why they have evolved and the various movements in jazz music but in order to keep it simple start with a list of your favorite songs. Once you have a list of maybe twenty or so songs from the repertoire of jazz standards you can listen to how jazz guitar players have interpreted the songs on your list. From listening to interpretations you can go to learning the chords that you need to play your songs and start practicing them.

As for improvisation, many people feel that in order to learn jazz guitar improvisation you need to learn to play a multitude of exotic scales and modes. A much more enjoyable alternative is to simply play along with your favorite songs. Learn licks from other jazz guitarists. You can always put what you have learned into the theoretical framework later if you feel that you need to. As a general rule, while you are learning, stick to the major scale all over the fretboard.

So, as with any style of music, if you want to learn how to play jazz guitar the jumping off point is the jazz standards and how you want to interpret your favorite pieces.

2006 NASCAR Preview

This speedway phenomena and crowd-sports fascination is an annual specialty racing mass-event, presented by NASCAR, Daytona Beach, Florida in the USA. Typically held in the state of North Carolina at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, Concord, N.C., it has become a part of the fabric of not only the local area, but also a National passion and worldwide sporting event of distinction.

It offers one and all - with an insatiable need and appetite for the ultimate in speed and custom wheels racing - some utter satisfaction and the perfect adrenaline rush, on-demand and lap-by-lap!

It remains one of the largest global spectator sports and sports-betting favorite, gaining ground every year. It has however also known some ups and downs in its interwoven, proud and tragic history.

It came rooted in and from humble beginnings in the whiskey bootlegging down South, the ensuing stock-car racing of the early years, to the formal establishment of the national sanctioning body to govern stock racing on December 12, 1947 called ‘NASCAR', the now well-recognized acronym and branding for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing.

Its halls of fame also carry shadows and sadness of numerous crashes, accidents and tragic incidents, famous driver deaths and losses that dot its development and sporting landscape. From struggling with and overcoming with triumph, numerous diverse challenges and obstacles like prohibition, the law, world war II, automotive and technological advancement and roller-coaster participation, retraction, interventions, the birth of the ‘HEMI', to tobacco advertising bans, corporate sponsorships partnering, increasing popularity, broadcasting and media coverage, personal and professionals competing on and off-track, increasing hype, droves of timeless champions and recognized fallen heroes, NASCAR and racing has remained a crowd pleaser and favorite.

NASCAR, among other things, also acts as the sanctioning and overseeing body for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. In retrospect, here are some quick-facts about the events and more specifically the 2005 NEXTEL Cup Series. With final races held on Saturday, May 21, 2005, with capacity crowds exceeding organizers' expectations and a new champion, everyone's eyes are on the pre-season thunder and hopefuls in 2006!

The Nextel Cup Series' second season, the 57th for NASCAR's premier division -- began in February 2005 at Daytona and ended 35 races later with the Ford 400 at Homestead.It consisted of 36-races in total, making up the 2005 Nextel Cup Series, including the season-ending 10-race Chase for the Nextel Cup "playoff." Tony Stewart tops the NASCAR world as the 2005 Nextel Cup Champion.

You might be asking what makes a driver eligible for the Nextel Open and who or what to watch for? Here are some of the general guidelines:

Little has changed in the rules for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series (Open and All-Star Challenge). Eligibility rules for competitor-drivers potentially partaking in the NASCAR - Nextel Cup Series include:

n Drivers and car owners who have won races in the current and preceding year.

n In the true spirit of competition, a driver who has left the team under whose banner a race might have been one, remains eligible and the car owner's new driver can also race (through the last race before The All-Star Race)

n Past NASCAR cup champions (past 10 years )

n The All-Star Race winners (past 10 years)

n The winning driver of the Nextel Open

n Drivers who have won in previous years, not eligible by the above (not owners)

n If 20 drivers are not eligible, winners from previous seasons still active on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, become eligible for The All-Star Race. All active drivers during that season become eligible, even if the field exceeds 20 competitors.

It is then easy to see that the entry requirements for NASCAR-banner type events, support standards of excellence and achievement. To qualify for the Nextel Open, drivers must be in the Top 50 of the final NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series [drivers] point standings or in the Top 50 of the current NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series [drivers] point standings as of March 14, 2006. Just because a driver is listed, does not mean they will be participating in the race.

The 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge, showcased race winners from the previous and current seasons, as well as past event champions and series champions from the past 10 years (1995-2005). All were active drivers and competed in at least one series event during the preceding (2004 or 2005) season. Also eligible was the winner of the NEXTEL Open, a preliminary event for teams not qualified for the all-star event, and one other NEXTEL Open driver, who secures an empowered fan-favorite vote, into full participatory rights and privileges in the all-star event. To qualify for the NEXTEL Open event, drivers must have been in the Top 50 of the final 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup point standings, or in the Top 50 of the current point standings at the time.

The ever-popular NASCAR's Nextel All-Star Challenge race, is likely to return to Lowe's Motor Speedway near Charlotte in 2006, but NASCAR is contemplating its future, always with an eye on what tomorrow may bring to the sport in general and the event in particular.

Quoted sources list The Charlotte Observer as reporting that recently a vice president from Nextel, (official sponsors of the NASCAR's Cup series as well as the all-star race), said that the company was satisfied with the Charlotte area's efforts for the race and indicated the event would likely come back in 2006.

NASCAR Vice President Jim Hunter said nothing has been decided about the long term. "Every year, we revisit the idea of moving the all-star race," he said. The story also lists that the all-star event creates approximately $94 million dollars' worth of impact on the region's economy in travel and tourism dollars spent.(Source: NASCAR Scene Daily Newsletter, 4-7-2005), so it is easily seen that this event is sporting a growing trend, not only in viewer-ship, but also in vested dollars and profits
