Jeff "Boday" Christensen plays interesting guitar. Clean, inventive. Tasty. Always has.

Way back in the mid-90s, Christensen broke out in the Twin Cities with Stan Kipper, Chico Perez, and Joel "Family Man" Arpin as part of the seminal Twin Cities Afro-Cuban rock crew One World . He could rip off licks fiery as a furnace, lay down chicken-scratch funk, or simply lull you with finesse—depended on what the occasion called for. He played on Straight from the Sun and stayed around long enough to do shows with them when Jenny Sanford (now of Bella Diva) was in the group. Then he jumped ship to go solo. "It was hard," Christensen recalls, "because I loved the band. Stan and Chico and Joel...everybody who was in it. But I wanted to pursue this instrumental music thing. I always wanted to have my music on the radio, like the Ventures. I wanted to see if I could do it. I got noticed."

That isn't saying the half of it. He met with a program director at Cities 97 and brought along a demo of his first smooth-jazz CD Boday (now out of print). She hooked him up with a California connection—radio promoters All That Jazz Agency—and he hasn't stopped getting airplay since. Three albums later (Do You Know, French Vanilla, Butterfly Legs), he's on playlists all over America and is aired over syndicated Canadian outlet Café Jazz. He's done studio gigs for national television and radio; he's featured in ads for Adidas, Discover Card, and Best Buy. Working with the band Jesse Brad, he opened concerts for the likes of Bob Seger, Styx, and Cheap Trick. Here in the Twin Cities, he did session work for years at Prince's Paisley Park Studios.

Nowadays, he occupies himself with a recently developed project, a cover band with vocalist Danielle Zenner. He calls it "a jazz duo and a pop, rock, R&B band. We're all over the map." The idea is to take in some of what money corporations can't resist frittering away on entertainment in even these troubled times. "The band is a four-piece, with Danielle fronting. [She's] really steeped in the standards. Anything from ‘Summertime' to ‘Misty', all of them. And she can sing the Heart bag, can do her Aretha [Franklin] thing."

Highly recommended off Butterfly Legs are the rich original "Bright Nites" and a sterling rendition of Sade's "Hang On To Your Love." For Do You Know, Boday (that's the name he records under) went to hell with himself, knocking out a true tour de force. "Central Park," straight from the Wes Montgomery school of swinging sophisticato, is an irresistibly jaunty strut that will have you tapping and nodding along before you know it. For the bridge, Christensen caps things off nice with a judicious taste of funk. "Since I Met You (The Ebony Mix)" mesmerizes: a dark, beautiful turn on acoustic guitar. If you enjoy the best jazz has to offer, you are going to love listening to this album.

Even in the Twin Cities locale, which is known for musicians with monster chops, the guy is a standout.

The Future Of Wind Energy

f you're one of those people who every winter puts out 10,000 holiday lights or every summer keeps the air conditioning cold enough to make frozen treats on the kitchen counter - or whether you're like everyone else who simply likes the modern convenience of electrical - then you should care about how we will generate electricity in the future.

We are in no danger of running out of coal, the primary fuel source for electricity generation in the US and many other parts of the world. And we could have as many new glowing nuclear power plants as we want. But the reality is that the pollution and safety impacts of these electricity-generating technologies forecast their necessary demise:

1) The problems with coal-fired power plants include sulfur (acid rain) and mercury pollution; coal-fired power plants are the biggest source of greenhouse gases in the world; and coal mining scars land and people alike.

2) Nuclear power plants are very clean in terms of emissions of typical pollutants, including carbon dioxide (the principal greenhouse gas), but the potential for accidents and terrorist strikes has most people doubting the wisdom of more nuclear power. And let's not forget that we still don't know what to do with the tons of long-term radioactive waste nuclear power plants produce.

So what does the future look like for electricity generation? We must start making major strides towards cleaner technologies like wind, solar, wave, and biomass. Today we talk about wind energy in an article that was adapted from materials made available by Lester Brown and the Earth Policy Institute.

People have been harnessing the power of the wind for centuries. The concept of wind energy is simple: the wind pushes against angled blades, causing them to move (much like the sail on a boat); the blades are attached to a hub and cause it to turn, which in turn can drive other components.

In olden days - back when wind-powered devices were called windmills - the turning motion of the hub was transferred to mechanical devices such as grist mills or groundwater pumps. graphic of wind turbines In a modern wind turbine, the hub drives an electrical generator and the output is electricity.

The modern wind turbine has come a long way in terms of sophistication, and the designs of today's wind turbines are elegant and very efficient compared to wind turbines from even a decade or two ago. Designers have also solved some problems associated with early wind turbines, such as birds dying by flying into them. Additional advancements have been made in siting technology - wind turbines can also be sited off-shore now.

With wind-generated electricity, the principal production cost is the capital outlay for initial construction. Since wind is a free fuel, the only ongoing cost is for maintenance. Given the recent volatility of natural gas prices, the stability graph of wind power cost; shows cost has come down from 38 cents per kilowatt hour in 1982 to 4 cents per kilowatt hour in 2002 of wind power prices is particularly appealing. With the possibility of even higher costs of natural gas in the future, natural gas-fired plants may be used increasingly as backup for wind-generated electricity.

When the wind industry first began to develop in California in the early 1980s, wind-generated electricity cost 38 cents per kilowatt-hour. Since then it has dropped to 4 cents or less in prime wind sites. And some long-term supply contracts have been signed for 3 cents per kilowatt-hour. By 2020, many European wind farms will be generating electricity at 2 cents per kilowatt-hour, making it cheaper than all other sources of electricity.

Wind-generating capacity worldwide is growing at over 30% per year and has jumped from less than 5,000 megawatts in 1995 to 39,000 megawatts in 2003 - an increase of nearly eight-fold. The fossil fuel with the highest growth rate - natural gas - grew at just over 2% annually during the same period. Oil grew at less than 2% annually, and coal at less than 1%. Nuclear generating capacity expanded by 2% annually.

Wind is appealing for several reasons. It is abundant, cheap, inexhaustible, widely distributed, clean, and climate-benign - a set of attributes that no other energy source can match. When the US Department of Energy (DOE) released its first wind resource inventory in 1991, it pointed out that three wind-rich states - North Dakota, Kansas, and Texas - had enough harnessable wind energy to satisfy all of the nation's electricity needs. Those who had previously thought of wind as a marginal potential source of energy obviously were surprised by this finding.

In retrospect, we now know that the 1991 data was a gross underestimate of the potential of this renewable energy source, because it was based on the technologies available in 1991. Advances in wind turbine design since then have enabled turbines to operate at lower wind speeds, to convert wind into electricity more efficiently, and to harness a much larger wind regime. Such advancement have perhaps tripled the amount of harvestable wind. Thus, while the DOE could say in 1991 that North Dakota, Kansas, and Texas had enough wind-energy potential to supply all national ELECTRICITY needs, we may now be able to say that they have enough harnessable wind energy to supply all national ENERGY needs. (See sidebar for more information.)

Once we get cheap electricity from wind, we have the option of electrolyzing water to produce hydrogen, which provides a way of both storing and efficiently transporting wind energy. At night, when the demand for electricity drops, the hydrogen generators can be turned on to build up reserves.

Once in storage, hydrogen can be used to fuel power plants, in much the same way that natural gas is used. This hydrogen can be used either as a backup for wind power or as an alternative to natural gas, especially if rising prices make natural gas prohibitively costly for electricity generation.

Hydrogen is also the fuel of choice for the fuel-cell engines that automakers worldwide are working on for our everyday vehicles. While hydrogen-powered vehicles may still seem far off in the future, if push comes to shove on the climate front - i.e. once it becomes more obvious that we must stop burning so much oil and pumping so much CO2 into the atmosphere - cars with gasoline-burning internal combustion engines could be converted to hydrogen.

Europe is leading the world into the age of wind energy, spurred in part by concerns about global warming. The record heat wave in Europe in August 2003 that scorched crops and claimed 35,000 lives has accelerated the replacement of climate-disrupting coal with clean energy sources.

The European Wind Energy Association projects that Europe's wind-based electricity-generating capacity will nearly triple from 2003 to 2010. By 2020, wind-generated electricity is projected to satisfy graph of wind power capacity by country; shows a steady upward trend for all countries, with Germany leading, followed by Spain and the U S, then Denmark and India the residential needs of 195 million Europeans - half of the region's population.

After developing most of its existing 28,400 megawatts of capacity on land, Europe is now tapping offshore wind resources as well. A 2004 assessment of Europe's offshore wind-energy potential concluded that if Europe moves more aggressively to develop its vast offshore resources, wind could be supplying all of the region's residential electricity by 2020.

Many countries in Europe are pushing hard to bring in more wind power. Here are a few examples.

1) The United Kingdom is requiring an investment of over $12 billion in off-shore wind farms that should satisfy the residential electricity needs of 10 million of the country's 60 million people.

2) Tiny Denmark, which led Europe into the wind era with the development of its own wind resources, now gets an impressive 20 percent of its electricity from wind.

3) Germany overtook the United States in terms of wind-based generating capacity in 1997. Now Spain is close to overtaking the United States as well.

Europe's leadership on wind energy has given it a major economic bonus: nine of the world's ten leading wind turbine manufacturers are in three countries - enmark, Germany, and Spain. These happen to be the three countries that have had the strongest and most stable market incentives for developing wind energy.

In the US, wind power has grown 26% per year on average over the last 5 years, but the United States is lagging in the development of wind energy. This is not because we can't compete technologically with Europe in manufacturing wind turbines, but because of a lack of leadership in Washington. The wind production tax credit of 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, which was adopted in 1992 to establish parity with fossil-fuel subsidies, has been permitted to lapse three times in the last five years, most recently at the end of 2003 when Congress failed to pass a new energy bill. Such uncertainties disrupt planning throughout the wind power industry.

The United States, with its advanced technology and wealth of wind resources, should be a leader in this field, but unfortunately it continues picture of wind farm to rely heavily on coal - a nineteenth century energy source - for much of its electricity at a time when European countries are replacing coal power with wind power.

Europe is not only leading the world into the wind age, it is also leading the world into the post-fossil fuel age - the age of renewable energy and climate stabilization. By demonstrating the potential for harnessing the energy in wind, Europe is unveiling the new energy economy for the rest of the world.

One final note about wind power. There are naysayers out there who claim that we would have to blanket the country with "wind-meels" to replace all our coal and nuclear plants. Don't believe it. Remember that on a wind farm, the "footprint" of the operation - the turbine base plus the service roads - occupies only 5% of the land area. That makes wind power a perfect partner with open-space operations like farming and ranching.

And oh, by the way, our current electricity-generating technologies are blanketing the country with pollution!

In Quran, not in Bible: For how long the major destructive wind of Aad lasted?

This is the second article of the series:" The Wind in Bible versus Quran".

 

The Bible says that the Almighty Creator 1) made the Winds His Angels, 2) His servants are flames of fire, 3) He has chariot, 4) He walks on the wings of wind and 5) He made the earth never moves etc.  The Noble Quran says that Naught is as Allah's likeness in attributes.  Any form, picture, thoughts that you put the Almighty Creator in it is absolutely mistaken.

The Wind in the Bible (2)

 

In Psalm 104:1-8, Kind David says:

"Bless Jehovah, O my soul. O Jehovah my God, thou art very great; You are clothed with honor and majesty:  Who covers himself with light as with a garment; Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain; Who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters; Who makes the clouds his chariot; Who walks upon the wings of the wind; Who makes winds his Angels; Flames of fire his servants; Who set the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved for ever. You cover it with the deep as with vesture; the waters stood above the mountains.  At thy rebuke they fled; At the voice of your thunder they hasted away.  They flowed over the mountains; they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them."

Herein, there are some important points:

1) The Bible describes the lord God, the Almighty Creator as:

• He has clothes
• He covers himself with light as with a garment
• He stretches out the heavens like a curtain
• He lays the beams of his chambers in the waters
• His chariot is made of clouds
• He walks upon the wings of the wind
• He makes winds his Angels
• His servants are flames of fires
• He set the foundations of the earth
• His voice is the thunder

 

2) The Bible says that the earth has foundations and it should not be moved for ever.

3) The speed of the Lord God was that of the wind.

4) The wind has wings!

 

Moreover, there are some discrepancies in the translation of some words in the many versions of the Bible e.g.:

• In some Bible's versions, the word "Angel" is translated to "messenger".
• In some Bible's versions, the word "wind" is translated to "spirit".
• In some Bible's versions, the word "curtain" is translated to "tent".

On the other hand, all of the above points are ABSOLUTELY rejected in the Noble Quran because:

 

1) The Noble Quran says that Naught is as Allah's likeness in attributes.  Any form, picture, thoughts that you put the Almighty Creator in it is absolutely wrong.

2) The Almighty Creator is not a body

3) The thunder is not the voice of the Almighty Creator.

4) When the Almighty Creator decides upon a matter, when He wants to do anything, He only says to it ‘Be!’ and it is.

5) The speed of the Lord God was that of the wind; for instance, does not He know the speed of the light?  However, Naught is as Allah's likeness in attributes. 

6) The wind has no wings!

7) the Angels are created from the Pure Light.

the Angels are the servants of the Almighty Creator and they never disobey Him.

9) The earth has No foundations and it is rounded and it moves

10) The Great Prophet King David can not say that about the Almighty Creator simply because he knows better who Allah is.

Aside from the Bible and the Quran, boys in schools know very well that the earth moves and it has two types of movements: the first one is around the sun at about 100,000 km/h.  It takes 365 days (1 year/12 months) for the Earth to complete one revolution around the Sun. and the other around itself. It takes 24 hours for the earth to spin around itself.

These two movements are responsible for the seasonal changes and the day and night respectively.

I really do not believe that the Lord God or King David says that the earth foundations and it should not be moved for ever. .

The Wind in the Noble Quran (2)

1) The Historical destructive wind as a Punishment for the disbelievers of the Ancient nation of Aad.

Verses 69:4-8 of the Noble Quran describe this destructive wind!

 

Historical Background:

Aad was an ancient nation.  Aad nation is always mentioned in the Noble Quran as a nation that came after Noah.  Allah sent his Prophet Hud to the people of Aad; some of them believed and many of them disbelieved. Allah punished the disbelievers of Aad by the wind and He saved the believers. The people of Aad were famous by their outstanding might.

It is said that Aad nation lived at the south of Saudi Arabia, nearby Yemen.

The Prophet Hud was Arabic.

The nation of Aad and the Prophet Hud are not mentioned in the Bible.

Thamud was an ancient nation. Thamud nation came after the nation of Aad; it is always mentioned in the Noble Quran as a nation that came after Aad.

Allah sent his Prophet Salih to the people of Thamud; some of them believed and many of them disbelieved. Allah punished the disbelievers of Thamud when they killed the Camel which was the miracle of the Prophet Salih who warned his people not to hurt that Camel and they agreed but they never kept their word.  The miraculous Camel emerged from a big rock and it has no father and no mother; it came out as an intact adult Camel following Allah's will when He says to anything He wants: Be! And it is.

The people of Aad were famous by the might and transgression.

It is said that Aad nation lived at the northern part of Saudi Arabia, nearby Yemen.

The nation of Thamud is too not mentioned in the Bible may be because the Prophet Salih was Arabic too.

The meanings of verses 69:4-8

Verses 69:4

The nation of Thamud and the nation of Aad both disbelieved in the Resurrection to come and they denied their Prophets and refuted the Day of Judgment.

Verses 69:5

As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the overwhelming Roar, an excessively severe shout of the Angel Gabriel. They were destroyed because of their transgression and idolatry; and it is said that their transgression drove them to disbelieve until they were destroyed.

Verses 69:6

And as for Aad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring wind. The wind was deafening, intensely clamorous, violent wind, [that was] powerful and severe [in its assault] upon Aad, despite their power and might.

Verses 69:7

Allah forced and imposed that wind upon them uninterruptedly for seven nights and eight days with the same force so that you might have seen the people therein lying prostrate, lying dead on the ground, as if they were the hollow, collapsed, trunks of palm-trees.

Verses 69:8

So do you O Muhammad see any remnant of them? Do you see one remaining?’ No!

YUSUFALI: but the Thamud, - they were destroyed by a terrible storm of thunder and lightning!

 

Verses 69:6

QARIB: as for Aad, they were destroyed by a howling, violent wind

SHAKIR: and as to ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent blast

PICKTHAL: and as for Aad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring wind,

YUSUFALI: and the 'ad, they were destroyed by a furious wind, exceedingly violent;

 

 Verses 69:7

QARIB: that he subjected upon them for seven nights and eight days consecutively and you might have seen them struck down as if they were the stumps of palm trees that had fallen down.

SHAKIR: which he made to prevail against them for seven nights and eight days unremittingly, so that you might have seen the people therein prostrate as if they were the trunks of hollow palms

PICKTHAL: which he imposed on them for seven long nights and eight long days so that thou mightest have seen men lying overthrown, as they were hollow trunks of palm-trees.

YUSUFALI: he made it rage against them seven nights and eight days in succession: so that thou couldst see the (whole) people lying prostrate in its (path), as they had been roots of hollow palm-trees tumbled down!

 

Verses 69:8

QARIB: can you see any remnant of them now?

SHAKIR: do you then see of them one remaining?

PICKTHAL: canst thou (O Muhammad) see any remnant of them?

YUSUFALI: then seest thou any of them left surviving?

2) What if Allah wants to do anything?

 

Verse 36: 82 says:

 

QARIB: when he wills a thing, his command is to say to it 'be', and it is!

SHAKIR: his command, when he intends anything, is only to say to it: be, so it is

PICKTHAL: but his command, when he intendeth a thing, is only that he saith unto it: be! and it is.

YUSUFALI: verily, when he intends a thing, his command is, "be", and it is!

 

The meanings of the verse:

 

His command, His affair, when He wills a thing, that is, [when He will] to create something, or to do anything is just to say to it ‘Be’, and it is.

3) The Precious verse (faith-wise) of the Quran that describes the Almighty Creator

 

Verse 42: 11 says

 

QARIB: the originator of the heavens and the earth, he has given you from yourselves, pairs, and also pairs of cattle, thereby multiplying you. there is nothing like him. he is the hearer, the seer.

SHAKIR: the originator of the heavens and the earth; he made mates for you from among yourselves, and mates of the cattle too, multiplying you thereby; nothing like a likeness of him; and he is the hearing, the seeing

PICKTHAL: the creator of the heavens and the earth. he hath made for you pairs of yourselves, and of the cattle also pairs, whereby he multiplieth you. naught is as his likeness; and he is the hearer, the seer.

YUSUFALI: (he is) the creator of the heavens and the earth: he has made for you pairs from among yourselves, and pairs among cattle: by this means does he multiply you: there is nothing whatever like unto him, and he is the one that hears and sees (all things).

 

The meanings of the verse:

 

He (Allah) is the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the One Who created them [without precedent]. He has made for you, from your own selves, pairs, when He created Eve from Adam’s rib, and [also] pairs, males and females, of the cattle and whereby He multiplies you through marriage. There is nothing like Him; there is no likeness of Him, exalted be He). He is the Hearer, of what you say, the Seer, of your works.  Naught is as His likeness in attributes, knowledge, power and providence etc.

The basic point of faith is that Naught is as your Almighty creator.

Since man is a creature which has Spirit that gives him like; and since Naught is as the likeness of your Creator, then the Almighty Creator has NO SPIRIT.

Hence, the Almighty Creator is not a body or material like us.  Any form, picture or thoughts that you put the Almighty Creator in it is absolutely wrong.

According to the Islamic Rule of Faith, if any one put the Almighty Creator in any form, picture or thoughts, he or she is Disbeliever and has No faith; and he will end up in the Hereafter as a dweller of the Eternal Fire.

This is in spite of what name(s) you are giving to your Almighty Creator e.g. Allah, Lord, God, Jehovah etc.

On the other hand, the vice versa is absolutely True!
